Almost 7,500 customers were without power Monday morning in a swath of central Denver. It has since been restored for many of them.

What was to blame? Xcel told 9NEWS it was a squirrel.

The outage affected 9NEWS, which had to improvise during the morning newscast after darkness fell (Cheryl Preheim coped by eating some pecan pie).

The Xcel map showed two outages in the area of South Broadway and West Alameda Avenue. According to Xcel, 7,481 customers were without power at the height of the outage.

A blown transmitter (rather than 9NEWS not paying its electric bill) was to blame for the outage, according to Xcel.
