This Denver artist painted a mural of an AR-15 to spark conversation

The artist hopes the mural will stay up for a while and that people don't give up on dialogue.

On February 14, a gunman killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

“The underlying thing that a lot of people just don’t want to speak about and don’t want our attention focused on is our – is our obsession with violence in this country,” Gamma Gallery said.

He said the work is also a tribute to the young people in Parkland and across the nation calling for change.

“The way these kids are standing up got these people that are against any kind of change to start moving their feet,” he said. “This is just kind of to throw some support at them.”

The artist hopes the mural will stay up for a while and that people don’t give up on dialogue.

“It’s in our daily conversation but we have a very short attention span,” he said.

Morgan Singleton stopped on her bike Sunday afternoon to take pictures of the mural. She follows Gamma Gallery on social media and wanted to see his latest work in person.

“I really like what he does,” Singleton said. “He’s always been really good at doing the powerful murals.”

Singleton said she believes the mural speaks to a problem in the United States.

“I thought it’s very telling of what’s been happening recently in our country with all the school shootings and AR-15s,” she said. “I do think they need to do something about that.”

Gamma Gallery agrees. His mural is both art and commentary.

“I just like to put these more topical pieces here,” he said. “Hopefully, the public doesn’t get too distracted too soon and forget about this whole situation.”
