VA hospital should open summer of 2018

A spokesperson for the center says their construction contract ends January 25, 2018. As long as that target date is met, the hospital will have 6 months to get the hospital ready for opening.

If all goes as planned the new VA medical center in Aurora should open in the summer of 2018.

A spokesperson for the center says their construction contract ends January 25, 2018. As long as that target date is met, the hospital will have 6 months to get the hospital ready for opening.

Ground was broken on the project in 2010. Since then there have been numerous delays and other complications.

Federal investigators say frequent design changes and a complex and costly design caused costs to skyrocket. The hospital is expected to cost nearly $1.7 billion, nearly triple the 2014 estimate.

There were also work stoppages when the VA was found to be in breach of its contract with its construction consortium, Kiewit-Turner in late 2014.

The Inspector General's report lists a few other reasons for the state of the project, including the inclusion of unnecessary aesthetic design choices that added to the project's final cost.

"The design included elements that were considered by the construction contractor as well past the standard of care for a health care facility, such as custom glass, custom walls and wood and custom floors," the report said.
