The Fountain Police Department is investigating an incident where they say a young girl was accidentally shot in the head Sunday afternoon.

The shooting was reported at around 5 p.m. in the 780 block of Progress Drive, KOAA-TV reports.

The victim, who police say was six years old, was taken to the hospital. As of Monday morning, she was in "critical but stable" condition. 

In a news release, Fountain Police said “it is unknown at this time how the injury occurred.” Authorities did not specify why they believe the shooting was not on purpose.
