1 in 10 Coloradans experience hunger

The food bank says most of its patrons are low-wage workers, children or seniors on fixed incomes.

One in 10 Coloradans worry about where their next meal will come from according to the Food Bank of the Rockies.

"You have a situation where possibly someone is not going to eat today and we help them provide a meal not only for themselves but for their families," said Paul Berteau, who's been a volunteer with the food bank for more than 20 years. "A number of our patrons who receive food might go without food so their children can have food, so that their grandchildren can have food."

The food bank says most of its patrons are low-wage workers, children or seniors on fixed incomes. Just $1 can provide 4 meals for hungry people in your local community.

This Saturday you can donate non-perishable food, cash and other items at 9Cares Colorado Shares. It runs from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

9NEWS will be at the following locations:

  • 9NEWS Studios (Speer & Logan)
  • Hilton Denver Inverness Hotel & Golf Club (East of I-25 and Dry Creek)
  • Southwest Plaza (Wadsworth & Bowles)
  • Pima Medical Institute (Mississippi & Potomac)
  • American Furniture Warehouse (I-25 & 84th)

Food banks also need toiletries ranging from shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes to diapers. Our partner, Food Bank of the Rockies, coordinates the food distribution to individual food banks across Colorado.

"I wish from some perspective that I could work myself out of a job," said Berteau. "Unfortunately, I haven't done that in 20 years. And that's not very real on the horizon and that's a disappointment, but we've got to keep going. We've got to keep trying to change things."
