DENVER – David Pettner, one of Colorado's outstanding teachers is now leaning on his students for some help and extra TLC.

The April 2013 recipient of the 9Teachers Who Care award had a stroke in April.

The 38-year-old husband, father of two girls and art teacher at Resurrection Christian School in Loveland is currently undergoing intense, daily physical therapy.

The stroke altered his eyesight as well as some coordination. He also has a hole in his heart that caused a massive clot to go to his brain.

It is hard for those who know Pettner to think he could possible for him to have a hole in his heart. He has devoted his life to letting children know that they can create anything they want. He also makes it a point to let every child know they are loved and accepted for who they are.

"My greatest work of art right now comes through my children who are here," Pettner told 9NEWS last year. "I love teaching. I love being with kids."

Those children along with their families and staff at Resurrection Christian School are coming together on May 12 to help raise money to assist with Pettner's medical costs.

Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakhouse in Loveland (3479 Mountain Lion Dr.) is donating 20 percent of total sales 3:30 to 9 p.m. to Pettner's upcoming heart surgery and recovery.
