KUSA - Retired General George Casey, Jr. led US forces in Iraq before serving as Army chief of staff in the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations.

He sat down with 9NEWS on Tuesday, before the U-S airstrike on a Syrian air base.

He shared his thoughts on the conflict there and on the struggle with the self-described Islamic State, arguing that we need to adjust our expectations and strap in for the lang haul with the goal of minimizing disruption to life in the developed world.

He also argued against proposed cuts to foreign aid in President Trump's budget, arguing that improving life in other countries can benefit US security.

Casey also works as an advocate for hiring veterans and shared his thoughts on why employers sometimes avoid bringing vets on board.

Balance of Power airs every Sunday at 8:50 a.m. on 9NEWS, right before NBC’s Meet the Press. Episodes and extended interviews are posted on Sundays to 9NEWS.com.
