The Colorado Rapids open the 2018 campaign on Saturday, when they play host to Sporting Kansas City at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo.

Rapids Executive Vice President and General Manager Padraig Smith joined the 9NEWS weekend morning team to talk about the upcoming season ahead of kickoff.

The Rapids had a busy off-season, including the signing of 14 new players, new head coach Anthony Hudson, and some new front office staff. Fans know the team has been more defensive-minded over the past few seasons, but this year, Smith said they are putting a bigger emphasis on the attack.

Saturday's game is expected to be a sell-out crowd (18,061). Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST, and will be televised on Altitude.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early, as the Rapids have many activities planned for opening day. The Rapids Tailgate Live starts at 6 p.m. at Eighteen76, which will feature a brand new digital pregame show featuring lineup announcement, player/guest appearances and giveaways. The main gates also open at that time.

You can find more about the game day activities by visiting the Colorado Rapids website.

The Rapids hold an overall record of 23-24-13 with Sporting KC (18-5-8 at home) so fans can expect an intense match to open the season.

Watch the video posted above to hear what Smith had to say about the new season, and tune in to 9NEWS at 5 p.m. for a live report previewing the game.
