Since Bill Tierney arrived no team has matched up better with DU than Notre Dame. The last four games between the two teams has been decided by a single goal, but the Pioneers have won them all.
In fact, DU has won five straight against the Fighting Irish, but that doesn't mean this isn't a rivalry game.
"It's interesting in a world of eastern dominance that we have one of the greatest rivalries in the game in two of the western most teams," DU Head Coach Bill Tierney said. "You don't build rivalries unless both teams are good, and both teams are good."
The games between DU and Notre Dame have been good too, in fact they've been great. Three of their last four head-to-head games have gone to overtime and their match up earlier this season was decided in the last second.
"I always get texts after the game from my grandparents saying you can't keep doing this to me," DU senior defenseman Christian Burgdorf joked.
Denver won the earlier season meeting between the two, but this game is the big game. The loser goes home, while the winner will move onto the Final Four.
The quarterfinal game will be played in New York this Saturday at 1:30pm MT.
