The La Junta Tigers capped off an undefeated season with a 17-10 victory over Kent Denver for the 2A state title Saturday afternoon.
Going into the championship game, La Junta's offense was unstoppable. The team put up 434 points (an average of 36.17 per game) on their opponents, and allowed only 67. Saturday was a different story.
The Tigers turned to the defense to lead them to victory. Izahiah Petique got the scoring going early on with a pick-6 off of Kent quarterback, Joey Licht. He would have one more interception on the day, and his teammates would contribute another in the first half.
Kent Denver's lone touchdown on the day came from junior Josh McDonald on a long run in the second half, but the Sun Devils couldn't penetrate La Junta's tough defense.
