The Ponderosa Mustangs advanced to the second round of the 4A football playoffs, after defeating Mesa Ridge 40-14 Saturday night.
Ponderosa, led by junior quarterback Sterling Ostdahl, put up a commanding 21-0 lead at halftime. Ostdahl rushed for two of the team's three first half touchdowns and put the game all but out of reach for the Grizzlies. Senior Cole Hall also found the end zone on a 20 yard rush.
The Mustangs' defense proved to be overpowering as well. Mesa Ridge put itself in scoring position to close out the half, but Ponderosa's defensive line made a statement, holding their opponents to no gain from the two-yard line with seconds remaining.
Mesa Ridge was finally able to get on the board in the third quarter. On its first drive of the second half, Isiah Avilez scored on a 75 yard reception to pull his team within two scores, but Ponderosa would fend them off. The Mustangs pulled away in the fourth quarter to win this one, 40-14.
