Eight state championships in one day? You'd better believe it. The Sunday morning Prep Rally featured highlights from the boys' soccer state title games, as well as the volleyball championships.
In 5A soccer, it was a rematch from the 2014 state title game: Broomfield versus Boulder. Two years ago, Boulder was shut out by their opponents. This game had plenty of goals. After a 1-1 tie in regulation and overtime, this one would be settled in 14 rounds of penalty shots (yes, 14, that is not a typo).
The 3A soccer title game also went to a shootout between Kent Denver and Jefferson Academy, after two overtime periods left us tied at 2-2. The 4A game between Battle Mountain and The Classical Academy held far less drama, but it also included the most goals out of all of our state soccer games.
The state volleyball tournament also held its fair share of drama. The 5A match was between Mountain Vista and top-ranked Fossil Ridge, and it would have to be decided in a fifth and final set. Last year, Lewis-Palmer lost in the 4A state championship, but this year, they were looking to bounce back over Holy Family. The Eaton Reds played for their fourth straight 3A title against rival Valley, and Dayspring Christian looked to win its first volleyball championship against 2A defending champ, Yuma. Finally, the 1A title match would come to Kit Carson and Fleming.
The lone football playoff game from Saturday in the Prep Rally came from Colorado Springs, where Mead tried to upset Palmer Ridge.
