A 27-year-old backcountry skier was killed in an avalanche over the weekend, the first avalanche death in this state this season.

Abel Palmer, of Durango, died in an area locally known as Sam's Trees, between Red Mountain Pass and Silverton, according to San Miguel County Search and Rescue.

A preliminary report from the Colorado Avalanche Information Center doesn't offer many more details. He was with one other skier who was not hurt.

San Miguel County Search and Rescue urges people to remain vigilant while traveling in the backcountry.

The CAIC says the avalanche danger in this area and most of the state is considerable right now.
