Seriously injured backcountry skier rescued in Gilpin County

Windy weather conditions have prohibited any use of a helicopter.

Rescue crews worked Sunday to free a seriously injured skier in Gilpin County.

The Gilpin County Sheriff's Office first got the call around 11 a.m. from the skier's friend who said the man he was skiing with, a 35-year-old, was injured.

The Gilpin County Sheriff's Office, Alpine Rescue, Rocky Mountain Rescue, Timberline Fire Protection District and Gilpin ambulance were all dispatched to the area above Tolland Road in Rollinsville, a town south of Nederland.

The injured skier was at the Forest Lakes trailhead. Around 7:30 p.m., the Alpine Rescue Team carried the skier out on foot. He has since been taken to the hospital. The sheriff's office says the man has serious injuries to his lower body.

Windy weather conditions have prohibited any use of a helicopter.
