The Colorado Rapids announced on Monday the club's seventh offseason signing.

The club acquired defender Tommy Smith from Ipswich Town of the English Football League Championship. Smith will occupy an international roster spot.

Smith, 27, has played with Ipswich Town, Stevenage Borough, Brentford and Colchester Untied. He has also appeared on England's U-17 and U-18 teams and has represented New Zealand's national team.

“Bringing in someone of Tommy’s caliber along the back line was a top priority for us this offseason,” Rapids Executive Vice President & General Manager Pádraig Smith said in a news release. “His experience and leadership will be great assets for us, and we look forward to him joining us in Arizona this week for the start of preseason training camp.”

The Rapids signed Tommy Smith to a two-year contract with a club option in year three.
