A Colorado Department of Transportation employee helped avert a possible tragedy Friday morning along a busy Interstate 25 just south of Mulberry Street.

Michael Lang, a motorist safety worker, saw a man in a motorized wheelchair along the shoulder of the right northbound lane as rush hour traffic whizzed by.

"I needed to get him safe, so I pulled over and helped him out as best I could,'' Lang said. "He was a little disoriented and needed some help. That's what I'm out here for is to help.''

Lang called law enforcement and an ambulance and the unharmed man warmed up inside the cab of Lang's pickup until Colorado State Patrol and an ambulance arrived. Poudre Fire Authority trucks blocked the right northbound lane, which backed up traffic.
