Motorcyclist in critical condition after crash in Larimer County

The first people on the scene -- an off-duty sheriff's deputy and another citizen -- helped the injured motorcyclist until an ambulance arrived to take him to the hospital.

A motorcyclist is in critical condition after he was hit by a minivan turning into a driveway in Berthoud on Sunday afternoon, according to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.

The crash happened just before 12:30 p.m. on the 600 block of East Highway 56. The motorcyclist, only identified as a 33-year-old man from Fort Collins, was headed eastbound when the minivan, driven by a woman headed westbound, turned into a driveway.

The motorcyclist hit the right rear panel of the van. The woman driving the minivan was the only person in the van at the time of the wreck and was not injured.

The first people on the scene -- an off-duty sheriff's deputy and another citizen -- helped the injured motorcyclist until an ambulance arrived to take him to the hospital.

Investigators say at this time, they don't believe drugs or alcohol are factors in the crash. A 2-mile stretch of East Highway 56 was closed for more than 4 hours as the Larimer County Sheriff's Office CRASH team investigated.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash and hasn't spoken to law enforcement is urged to call Deputy Billy Gentry at 970-498-5558
