Shelter opened in Vail for stranded motorists after I-70 shut down

Several closures on the interstate due to bad weather in the mountains has forced state officials to open up a shelter for stranded motorists.

Safety closures along Interstate 70 near Vail have forced local law enforcement to open up a shelter for stranded motorists.

The worst traffic trouble is between Silverthorne and Frisco around the Dillon Reservoir. Closures at separate points have stopped motorists traveling into the High Country from the weekend for hours.

As of 9:45 p.m., Vail Police have opened up a shelter at 75 S. Frontage Road West in the mountain town. Pets are allowed so long as there is space.

Traffic near Vail is being rerouted onto Frontage Road during the closure.

The eastbound lanes of I-70 have been shut down at mile marker 180 just before Vail Pass since around 7:30 p.m.

I-70's eastbound lanes have also been shut down due to safety concerns at Dowd Junction (mile marker 171) and Dotsero (mile marker 133).

The interstate is also shutdown headed west at Silverthorne (mile marker 201) due to road conditions.

The Colorado Department of Transportation says there's no estimated time for reopening at any of the points on I-70 around Vail.
