KUSA — Wind gusts topped 50 mph in Denver Tuesday afternoon – and reached 69 miles per hour in Boulder and 83 miles per hour near CO 93, the National Weather Service tweeted.

The winds downed trees, knocked out power, toppled semi-trucks and even closed multiple major highways.

Due to high winds and poor visibility, the Colorado Department of Transportation closed Interstate 76 at Wiggins.

US 85 was closed in both directions between Nunn and Wyoming for the same reason.

Northbound I-25, meanwhile, was snarled by a toppled semi-on the ramp to Highway 7. CDOT initially said the highway was closed here, but has since corrected this to say traffic is getting through.

There is also a high wind restriction for all high and light-profile vehicles near the Wyoming border.

Farther south, a toppled semi closed I-25 at mile post 68. This part of the highway has since reopened.

The National Weather Service went as far as to recommend that drivers "reconsider traveling for the next three to four hours." Winds died down by Tuesday evening.

In addition to highways, the wind also impacted public transportation. RTD says due to the wind, the A Line between Union Station and Denver International Airport is running every 30 minutes, at 27 minutes after the hour and 57 minutes past the hour . The W was also delayed.

RTD says due to a "crossing gate malfunction caused by high winds," no R Line trains can move between the Peoria and Fitzsimons Stations, causing severe delays.

In Aurora, East 6th Avenue and North Potomac Street closed due to a downed light pole. This has also knocked down power in parts of the city.
