DENVER - Students at East High School in Denver had a special visitor Monday to celebrate Black History Month.
Denver Public Schools Superintendent Tom Boasberg taught a Social Studies lesson with former Superintendent Dr. Evie Dennis at his side.
Dennis led desegregation in Denver schools and started several diversity programs during her 28-year tenure.
She says lessons in civil rights and overcoming adversity are crucial to the future of these students.
"History is necessary so you will be able to cope and deal with the future," she said.
Dennis says students must understand the past so they can build their future on the bedrock laid by others.
Dennis is in the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame. She is also a member of the United States Olympic Committee.
