In 2005, the Denver Affiliate of the Susan G Komen for the Cure®, Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation together with Saint Joseph Hospital developed a mobile mammography program to meet the needs of the community for screening mammography. Komen and the Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation have and continue to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the unit. For the last three years, the Safeway Foundation has been a significant supporter. Safeway's donation enabled a conversion from analog to digital technology in 2009.
The van travels in and around Denver and, in 2011, provided nearly 5000 mammograms to insured and uninsured women alike. Over the last three years, 48 breast cancers were diagnosed on exams performed on the van, allowing these women the best chance at survival due to the early nature of their cancers.
