Riley believes that education can break the chain of poverty and exploitation. Her efforts have stocked books for children in a local women's shelter and have helped villages in Africa.

Englewood, CO

Age 15

Reading has not only enhanced Riley Carney's imagination, it is the catalyst for her program called Breaking the Chain.  Her goal is to eliminate illiteracy and poverty for all children.  Her compassion for others has led her to believe that education can break the chain of poverty and exploitation.  While her fundraising efforts have benefited two villages in Africa, she has also furnished a room and stocked the shelves full of books for children staying in a local women's shelter. Carney has also raised money to purchase more than 600 children's books for the Colorado Reach Out and Read program.
