Denver, CO - At a Sunday ceremony at the Greenwood Village Comedy Works, 9NEWS captured the hearts of Emmy voters and claimed 23 of the coveted statues recognizing outstanding achievement in broadcast and digital news at the 24th Annual Heartland Regional Emmy Awards. KUSA earned more Emmys than all other Denver news stations combined.
9NEWS President and General Manager Mark Cornetta said "The quality of our storytelling has always been the hallmark of 9NEWS and it is rewarding to see that so many of our talented staff were recognized for their outstanding achievements."
9NEWS capped the successful evening by winning the inaugural award for News Excellence which recognizes outstanding achievement in news operations and programming, and Station Excellence, recognizing outstanding achievement across all facets of a station's operation, from news and programming to community service and promotion.
"To be recognized across such an array of reporting categories is certainly gratifying," said 9NEWS Vice President and News Director Patti Dennis, "but I think everyone at 9NEWS would agree that being recognized both for the overall quality of our news products and our station as a whole is testament to the quality of work done here by everyone everyday."
9NEWS won the Emmy for Outstanding Evening Newscast and further claimed the Emmy in Community Service for Hero Central which matches people in need with those who can offer help.
Named outstanding news anchor by the Heartland Chapter Sunday night, 9NEWS weekend anchor Kyle Clark took three awards including Spot News Coverage and Feature News Report - Light Feature. Investigative Reporter Deborah Sherman claimed top honors in Journalistic Enterprise for a composite of her investigative reports while 9Wants to Know colleague Jace Larson won top honors for a series of reports on home foreclosures.
