Denver, CO - 9NEWS morning anchor Gary Shapiro has enjoyed a long and successful career delivering morning headlines with his characteristic laugh and good cheer. 9NEWS is proud to announce that Gary is being honored with induction into the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Heartland Chapter Silver Circle.
"The people in Denver television who have received this honor before me are far more deserving of the recognition," Shapiro said this morning in his Midwestern, self-deprecating style. "I am surprised and honored to be mentioned with them, and proud to be joining (9NEWS anchor) Mark Koebrich and (9NEWS Vice President and News Director) Patti Dennis in the Silver Circle."
9NEWS President and General Manager Mark Cornetta said "I am very proud of Gary's many accomplishments and contributions to 9NEWS. He is an outstanding journalist and all around a great person. We are lucky to have Gary as a member of the 9NEWS family and congratulate him on this great honor. "
Shapiro began his career at 9NEWS in 1983, eventually assuming morning anchor duties in 1989. He has anchored the morning news with Kyle Dyer for 15 years. Shapiro has won numerous regional Emmy awards, and received the Edward R. Murrow award in 1992 for documentary reporting. Shapiro will be inducted into the Silver Circle at the annual Heartland Emmy Awards Galas on Saturday, July 23, 2011.
