Denver, CO - The Radio Television Digital News Association today announced the regional winners of the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award. For the second consecutive year, 9NEWS is the proud recipient of seven awards including Overall Excellence, Breaking News Coverage and Investigative Reporting.
9NEWS received more awards than any other station in the five state mountain region of Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. 9NEWS captured top honors in seven of 13 categories. 9NEWS Vice-President and News Director Patti Dennis said, "The recognition from the RTDNA mirrors the commitment we have to our viewers: on every story whether it's breaking news, investigative news or features to put a smile on their faces, when they want the best coverage of Colorado across the widest range of platforms including the web and mobile, they can always rely on the Networks of 9NEWS."
9Wants to Know investigative reporter Deborah Sherman claimed the award in the Investigative category for her story, "Scene Safe," which demonstrated how Aurora firefighters refused to render emergency medical services to a multiple gunshot wound victim, despite assurances from Aurora police that the scene had been secured. Aurora Fire officials would later admit that their employees had erred and instituted changes to their procedures as a direct result of the 9Wants to Know investigation.
9NEWS Reporter Chris Vanderveen was recognized with two awards for his work. Vanderveen's story with National Press Photographers Association regional photographer of the year, Anne Herbst, about deceased Merino high school wrestler Kyle Kasper and the boy's lasting, inspirational influence on his team won the individual award for Sports Reporting, as well as being part of Vanderveen's award-winning Writing composite.
All of the regional honorees will now be considered for national Edward R. Murrow Awards which the RTDNA will announce in June.
RTDNA has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Murrow's pursuit of excellence in journalism embodies the spirit of the awards that carry his name. All winning entries can be seen on the RTDNA website.
