Denver - Due to intense interest in the wake of the ongoing wildfires in northern Colorado, 9NEWS will be collecting donations both for wildfire victims and firefighters as a part of 9Cares Colorado Shares and as part of an ongoing project with the Fort Collins Coloradoan.
9NEWS President and General Manager Mark Cornetta said "We've seen incredible viewer interest, as indicated by Nielsen, for both our newscasts and our website. That tremendous interest from our viewers has inspired us to take that concern and emotion and focus it into a source of tangible aid and comfort for both the victims of the fire and the brave men and women fighting those fires. Colorado has a long tradition of neighbors helping neighbors, and I am confident we'll see an enormous outpouring of support."
Coloradoan Media Group President & Publisher Judi Terzotis said "This fire has happened in our own back yard - literally. We've seen friends and colleagues be displaced, even as family and neighbors step up to battle the blaze. The outpouring of support from our community has been overwhelming and inspiring. At the Fort Collins Coloradoan, we are doing all that we can do to help keep our neighbors informed through around-the-clock coverage online and authoritative depth in the paper. We want to give something in return -- the Coloradoan Media Group along with the Gannett Foundation made a $10,000.00 donation to our local Red Cross chapter. We hope that others in our community are able to dig deep to help those affected by the High Park Fire."
The 9Cares Colorado Shares Summer Drive is this Saturday, June 16th from 7am to 4pm. Donations specifically for wildfire relief will be accepted at the 9NEWS Studios, 500 Speer Blvd. in Denver, and at the King Soopers at 4503 JFK Parkway in Fort Collins. We are accepting cash and checks on behalf of the American Red Cross and the Colorado Professional Firefighters Foundation.
In addition to the 9Cares Colorado Shares event, people can visit the "Wildfires" section on 9NEWS.com or on coloradoan.com for information on how to donate time or money to the wildfire relief efforts.
