DENVER - Even if you already know the ending, you still can't help but wonder how Jim Davidson survived the accident that claimed another man's life in 1992.
Davidson, a Colorado climber and motivational speaker, ascended Mount Rainier in Washington with his best friend Mike Price. When they began their descent, a snow bridge collapsed from underneath them. Price fell into a crevasse, pulling Davidson down with him.
The fall killed Price instantly, leaving Davidson without his friend and without much hope for survival. Davidson lived and has devoted his life to motivating others that truly anything is possible. Davidson's story is featured in the book "The Ledge," which he co-authored with Denver Post writer Kevin Vaughan. The book is in stores now.
Quite frankly, Davidson shouldn't be alive. But with keen survival tactics and a cool head, Davidson climbed out of the crevasse and escaped death. The Discovery Channel "I shouldn't Be Alive" later featured Davidson's story during the second season of the series.
"The Ledge" follows in the footsteps of the success of Aron Ralston's book "Between a Rock and a Hard Place," as well as the film inspired by Ralston's story, "127 Hours." During a canyoneering trip in Utah in May 2003, Ralston was forced by an accident to cut off his right hand with a dull knife, freeing himself from a boulder and helping him survive.
Davidson and Vaughan say "The Ledge," like Ralston's story, is a "testament to an ongoing cultural fascination" with challenges that test the human limit and "what would you do" scenarios while facing a threat to one's own mortality.
Davidson and Vaughan will be signing copies of their book on July 26 at 7 p.m. at The Tattered Cover in LoDo, 1628 16th Street, Denver.
They will also visit the Café Columbine in Fort Collins, 802 W. Drake Road, Suite 101 on July 27 at 7 p.m. The tour will conclude at the Boulder Book Store at 7:30 p.m., 1107 Pearl Street in Boulder on Aug. 11.
