De Niro plays boxing trainer in 'Hands of Stone'

De Niro plays boxing trainer in new film.

DENVER - You need a cast of heavy hitters to tell the story of legendary boxer Roberto Duran and his infamous “no mas” fight, and that’s exactly what “Hands of Stone” brings.

Edgar Ramirez makes Duran’s story come to life, while Robert De Niro portrays renowned trainer Ray Arcel. Usher also makes an appearance as Duran’s biggest competitor, Sugar Ray Leonard.

The film is about one of the greatest stories in the history of boxing, but it also revolves around the love story between Duran and his wife Felicidad, starring Ana de Armas.

“It’s a story about boxing and some of the most amazing fights in the history of boxing, but in the end, boxing is just a framework for a beautiful love story, “Ramirez told 9News. “It’s a story about relationships, redemption, loss and victory, and getting knocked down and getting back up.”

The actor said the entire process of preparing, learning about and training for the film took about a year. Ramirez said it was tough work, but it was fun getting to know the cast members who he now calls his close friends.

Ramirez said he was even calling Robert De Niro “Bobby” by the end of filming. “After a couple of drinks, he became Bobby,” he joked.

It was truly an honor,” de Armas explained. “We grew up watching De Niro in movies, he’s a legend. Edgar was in Venezuela, I was in Cuba, and one day we were on set with him sharing this beautiful story.”

“Hands of Stone” is now playing in theaters nationwide.
