KUSA - There was something monstrous out in the 9Backyard on 9NEWS 8 a.m. Godzilla!
You've probably heard there's a big-screen update coming out in just a few weeks of one of the world's most famous movie monsters. Denver has a Godzilla super fan named Mitchell Mark Mettam. He spent two years crafting a very impressive Godzilla costume that is so large, he needs a trailer to haul around all the pieces.
Mettam, who works as a school bus driver, says the outfit was a true labor of love. He made it out of foam urethane, silicone and fiberglass. The details include blades that light up, and a Godzilla nuclear-like blast of gas that streams out of the critter's mouth. For safety reasons, he wasn't able to rig it up during his 9NEWS visit.
"I've been a G-fan since '72," Mettam explained, "though I didn't get into the Ultimate Godzilla Fan Contest. I'm not sure why."
So what inspired him to climb into a spiny green suit? "Well, I like most fictional things, and dinosaurs, so the G-thing fits in my interests quite well," he said. Mettam will be showing off his handiwork at StarFest 2014, a big science fiction convention in Denver this weekend.
