EMMYS: The good and bad news for women in television

DENVER BUSINESS JOURNAL - The 2016 Emmy awards put a spotlight on a diverse pool of talent Sunday night.

Two of the biggest directing awards of the night went to women, with Susan Bier taking home the top prize for the limited series “The Night Manager” and Jill Soloway winning for the comedy "Transparent.” Soloway ended her acceptance speech by shouting, “Topple the patriarchy!”

But while women won top honors and gave “smart girl” answers on the red carpet, the television industry may not be as close to toppling the patriarchy as it appears.

The Guardian took a look at the women behind the scenes at some of the most critically acclaimed shows and found there aren’t many women in production roles.
