The plants can settle in gradually without the danger of a stressful period of hot weather.

Take advantage of this window - which could hold for up to a month - to start a new flower border or edit and re-arrange an existing one.

I'm tackling several spots in my perennial borders that aren't very interesting. I'm leaving some perennials in there but I'm removing others that either aren't performing well or just aren't showy enough to justify the space they occupy.

It's up to you to decide if you have plants that are just taking up space but not putting on enough of a show. Select others to replace them.

I'm going for late bloomers to guarantee me a splendid show in late summer and fall. These include asters, grasses, sedums and mums. I'll keep some perennials in these areas that bloom earlier to insure interest throughout the season.

Many nurseries are holding fall sales, so perhaps that's an additional incentive to do a fall planting project.
