If you have a birdbath, borrow it for a short time to create a pumpkin 'fountain." It's not going to have running water, but it will make a great statement.
I'm starting with a very large saucer-shaped pot. The birdbath sits inside this and soil is added to accommodate plants. Another pot sits in the center of the birdbath. Both this pot and the birdbath itself can also be filled with soil. The structure stands about four feet tall.
If you don't own a birdbath, or don't wish to have it out of commission for the autumn holidays, consider stacking three or four pots to get the same effect.
Once the structure is in place, let your imagination run wild. Fill it with pumpkins and gourds as well as frost tolerant plants such as pansies, kale and snapdragons. Consider using dried materials from your garden such as ornamental grasses, branches and seedpods. If temperatures dip below freezing, cover the whole thing with a sheet. This will help protect both the living plants and pumpkins, which will start to decay if they get frozen.
