Kale, snapdragons and pansies can all withstand freezing temperatures. Cvering them with sheets at night or pulling them into the garage will prolong their displays. Potted evergreens can also withstand the cold and benefit from protection during very cold nights.

The cold weather also reminds us to set out food for the birds. If you're tired of squirrels getting most of the bird seed, check out the squirrel-proof feeder from Duncraft. The feeding tube is encased in a wire grid that allows small birds to enter but keeps out squirrels and larger birds.

This feeder would help make winter days pass more constructively for kids. They can learn to identify some of Colorado's wild birds.
