FORT COLLINS - Three teenagers found more than $1,000 cash in a field and could have kept it. Instead, they handed it over to police - and police used the cash as evidence to prosecute a man for armed robbery.

On Tuesday, Fort Collins Police honored Claire Hooker, Amy Moreng and Elise Forzley, all of them 13 years old.

In February, they found more than $1,100 in a field near their homes. It turns out that the cash had been stolen from a Plato's Closet store nearby. At the time, the girls didn't know where the money came from.

"There was money everywhere, in the grass, in the dirt, and we were just grabbing it like it was going to disappear any second," Hooker said.

The girls argued over whether to keep the money. But they say they knew it wasn't theirs and decided to give it to police.

Police say that because the girls turned in the money, authorities went to check out the field. It was there that police also found a mask and simulated weapon-- all of which helped them prosecute the armed robbery.
