A very different kind of spring break

AURORA – Children's Hospital Colorado wouldn't often be confused with Daytona Beach or South Padre Island, but this is where some college students are spending their spring break anyway.

The students are from the University of Missouri-Columbia and they're in Colorado as part of a program called "Mizzou Alternative Breaks" which sends students to do volunteer projects throughout the United States.

"It's indescribable," says site leader Cole Lawson, who's leading a group of 12 students spending the week helping patients at Children's. "The kids themselves are just fascinating. You just never know what's going to come out of their mouths next and it's what makes this job so fun is being able to interact with these kids."

Lawson hopes the trip to Children's will become an annual event for Missouri students. As for the overall program, Lawson says it's about spending free time making a difference.

"The mission behind it is basically to expand what we know as students," he said.

Another group of Mizzou students is volunteering their time this week at the Denver Rescue Mission.
