9Cares Colorado Shares Summer Drive

DENVER - On Saturday, June 15, 9NEWS will hold the 9Cares Colorado Shares Summer Drive from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the 9NEWS parking lot at 500 Speer Blvd. 9News anchors and reporters will be collecting non-perishable food and clothing from viewers who drive through with donations.

DENVER - Summer should be a fun and enriching time for all Colorado kids, but for many it represents a time when children are at the greatest risk of experiencing hunger, losing access to school meals. Hunger Free Colorado and many partners will address child hunger through a statewide summer food program. During the summer months, more than 450 sites across the state will provide meals to children between the ages of one and 18 years old at no cost.

CLEAR CREEK COUNTY - The highest downhill half marathon in the country and possibly the highest downhill four-mile. It is the perfect race for the serious runner looking for a fast time and for the novice runner building up confidence! Slacker is their attempt at the oxymoron, because everyone knows if you can run a half marathon, much less at 10,000 feet, you are not a slacker!

DENVER - Japan comes to LoDo on June 22 and 23 for the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, a celebration of Japanese arts, food and culture. Held in the Denver Buddhist Temple and on Lawrence Street between 19th and 20th Streets, the festival presents traditional Japanese dance and singing, taiko drum performances, martial arts demos, and craft arts such as ikebana (flower arrangement) and bonsai (miniature trees).

Hunger Free Colorado Launches a New Kind of Food Truck

COLORADO - More than 800,000 Coloradans are at risk of hunger, with at least 25 percent of working families going without enough food to meet their basic needs. To help connect families to available food and nutrition resources, Hunger Free Colorado, the state's leading anti-hunger organization, launched a new kind of food truck last week that will visit local neighborhoods throughout the Denver metro area. But this truck won't serve cupcakes, gourmet sandwiches or street tacos. It's serving up access to computers and personal support to help local residents apply for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), as well as offering information on nearby food pantries and other nutrition programs.

COLORADO - Bringing home "gold" served as a driving force for 24 high schools vying in this year's Colorado School Breakfast Challenge, called the 2012-13 Breakfast Games. With a goal to improve overall student participation in their breakfast program, each competing school saw an up-tick in participation over the five-month period. Six schools around the state were recognized as winners of the challenge with an award and cash prize ranging from $2,000 to $4,000 during National School Breakfast Week, March 4-8.
