DENVER - This week's Hero Kid, Eboni Stevenson, a senior at Thomas Jefferson High School, has devoted more than 3,000 hours of her time to helping other students at Metro Denver Partners.
When 9NEWS reached out to Denver Public Schools in search of a local student superstar DPS Director of Media Relations, Kristi Armstrong, immediately recommended Eboni.
"Eboni Stevenson exceeded the school's standard for community service by logging 3,840 volunteer hours – a new school record," Armstrong, wrote in an email. "Eboni spent her volunteer hours with Metro Denver Partners as a peer leader for adolescent females ages 12 to 16, helping improve their team-building and decision-making skills."
Metro Denver Partners is an organization that strives to enrich the lives of children through peer mentorship.
"We are a long established mentoring organization that started in 1968. We are currently providing one on one mentoring service, matching one adult to one student," Metro Denver Partners Executive Director, Mary Ann Burdick, said in an interview.
Burdick said generally area schools refer students to the mentoring program.
"Originally, Eboni was referred to us by one of the schools," Burdick said. "[Eboni's] second year of being involved with partners ... she was asked to be a peer leader. So she really serves as a support and she is just an excellent role model to the other girls."
Eboni says she chose to mentor preteens and teens at Metro Denver Partners because she understands what they are going through.
"[Mentees] are trying to figure out what they should and shouldn't do," Eboni said in an interview. "They are experiencing that transition between middle school and high school. There's a lot of he said she said drama and [mentees] worry about boys."
Despite the difficulty transitioning can present Eboni says there is one piece of advice all young ladies need to hear.
"Stay focused," Eboni said.
Eboni will attend Colorado State University after graduation and she is already planning to get a Masters Degree in Social Work.
