Network your way to a new job
|
DENVER - In today's economy, having a large network of contacts is just as valuable as an updated resume. ![]() President and CEO of Excutives Network, Molly Wendell who beleives networking is the main method for finding a job agrees with old saying, "it's not what you know, it's who you know." Wendell was unemployed for two years and three days, during that time she developed a new way to look for a job. "I changed my approach and in 90 days I had 60 meetings and got 30 offers for positions never posted," Wendell said. Meet people in the field you're interested in and ask intelligent questions suggests Wendell. Asking questions makes potential employers realize that you could be a valuable asset for their company. Wendell composed a book entitled "The New Job Search: Breaking All the Rules," sharing her lessons of job searching with others. "[In the book] I talk a lot about different tactics of how to take that networking contact and take it a step further and engage with them to get more contacts," Wendell said. While meeting people is key in today's economy, making a good first impression and a great last impression is also extremely important. "One of the biggest lessons I learned was to fire the job boards, quit sitting in front of your computer and get out there and network," Wendell said. Executives Network, allows professionals to network nationwide to help each other find jobs and make contacts. Meetings are held online and in person, in Denver meetings are the second Thursday of every month at the Denver Athletic Club downtown.
