Spotify: CU students like to relax because…Boulder

BOULDER – This might surprise you, but according to Spotify, CU-Boulder students are relaxed.

Very, very relaxed.

According to the streaming service's analysis of the music-listening habits of the top 40 universities, students at CU-Boulder listened to Spotify's "Relax" playlist the most, because…well, Boulder.

They may making relaxation a priority, but that doesn't mean students at the former No. 1 party school don't like to do just that.

Case in point? The No. 1 most distinctive track CU-Boulder students enjoy is "Jungle (Remix)," by X Ambassadors and Jamie N Commons (featuring Jay-Z). Other songs that made that list include "High You Are (Branchez Remix)" by What So Not and "Recess" by dubstep icon Skrillex.

The most distinctive artists CU-Boulder students listen to? Slightly Stoopid (a sort-of-reggae band), Flume (another reggae-ish artist) and, once again, Skrillex.

Notice the pattern?

The most popular artists, meanwhile, were Calvin Harris, Flume, Kendrick Lamar, Drake and Kanye West (in their defense, the album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" by the now Mr. Kim Kardashian has made numerous lists for being one of the best of the decade).

These were the top 5 most popular songs (note how even cool CU-Boulder students aren't immune to the powers of Coldplay):

  • Summer - Calvin Harris
  • Rather Be (feat. Jess Glynne) - Clean Bandit
  • Latch - Disclosure
  • Magic - Coldplay
  • Am I Wrong - Nico & Vinz

Another part of the analysis? According to Spotify, CU-Boulder students wakeup, on average, 45 minutes earlier than students at other schools – at the bright and early time of 8:45 a.m. versus 9:30 a.m.

They also go to bed about a half hour earlier – at 12:30 a.m. rather than 1 a.m., according to the analysis.

Spotify determined its sleep/wakeup scheduled by looking at when a school breaches the 50-percent listening mark each morning – and returns below it each night.

Here are some patterns Spotify found at other schools:

  • Ohio State students listen to the most classical music
  • Students at the University of Alabama love country music
  • It's no surprise given that they live in the "city that never sleeps," but NYU students get the least amount of sleep. They also love hipster music.
  • BYU students go to bed the earliest
