9Health Fair: Improve your health, even if you feel well

KUSA - Reason No. 3 to attend 9Health Fair: You can improve your health to peak performance, even if you feel well.

The mission of 9Health Fair is to help people own their health, and become as healthy as possible. Even if you feel good, you could probably do something to improve your overall health.

Jumping off the couch and walking for 30 minutes can add years to your life. Not only can it help you lose any extra weight you might have, but it can help lower your blood pressure and increase your happiness. 9Health Fair will provide you with information that can motivate you to start or continue a healthy lifestyle. Make sure you have a good pair of shoes that support your feet. It will make your experience much more enjoyable.

Making small adjustments in what you eat can make a difference in your health. Try substituting yogurt or nuts for your afternoon salty snack. Your food choices are reflected in your 9Health Fair blood screening results. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently updated its food recommendations from the food pyramid, to the My Plate model (http://www.choosemyplate.gov/). It emphasizes five food groups that are necessary for a healthy diet: fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and dairy. Colorado company LivLiga (http://www.livligahome.com) makes dinnerware that reflects the My Plate model. The designs on the plate help you figure out how much of each food group should be served.

Did you know that water makes up 60 percent of your body weight? Water is the body's principal chemical component, and at the high altitudes in Colorado, it's easy to become dehydrated quickly. The Institute of Medicine recommends men drink about 3 liters (13 cups) of beverages daily, and women drink about 2.2 liters (9 cups). Total beverages means you can include water, milk, and juice. Beer, wine and caffeinated drinks also have a lot of water, but they shouldn't be the majority of your fluid intake. You can eat part of your water requirement too. Cucumbers and celery have high water content. 9Health Fair suggests leaving a drinking glass by your sink and drinking an extra glass when you wake up. You can also increase your water intake by having a drink with every meal and snack, and carrying a water bottle with you.
