King Soopers launched a new shopping program this month that give customers the chance to scan their own groceries while they’re shopping.

It’s called “Scan, Bag, Go,” and already underway in two Denver-area stores. By the end of the year, King Soopers plans to have the program in 34 local stories.

“It’s really easy, and it should speed up the process of shopping as well,” said Adam Williamson, a King Soopers spokesman.

The program offers shoppers two options. First, they can use a scanning device provided by the store. Or, they can download the “Scan, Bag, Go” app on their smartphones and connect a credit card to the account.

“When you go through [the store] you just scan the items and put them right into the cart and keep shopping,” Williamson said. “And when you finish the shop, you just scan the scanner at the self checkout…. you can pay there. Or, you can pay through the app as well and just walk out the store.”

As shoppers move through the store, they scan each item placed into their carts. Most items require a simple bar code scan. Other items, like produce, will require a weight or quantity. Scales are located in the produce section, with instructions, and signs throughout the store guide shoppers through the experience.

Williamson said customers who try "Scan, Bag, Go" will get a $5 discount if they spend $35 or more the first three times they use the program.

What about those shoppers who would try to take items without paying?

“Our customers are honest,” Williamson answered. “We have systems in place, I can’t tell how it works, but we have systems in place for those who choose to maybe not be honest.”

Grocery stores across the country continue to innovate.

Walmart and Sam's Club also have scan-as-you-go features in some stores. Amazon is still experimenting with a new store with no checkout lines or cashiers. And many other companies, like Safeway, offer home delivery options and curbside pick-up.

“We chase customers, not competition,” Williamson said. “When listening to customers, what they want, what their needs are, we’re giving them alternative ways of shopping.”
