Possible drunk driver led CSP on 66-mile chase along I-70

From Jeffco to Clear Creek to Summit counties, CSP tried to stop a suspected drunk driver and even used stop-sticks before the driver pulled over on their own - 66 miles later.

A suspected drunk driver was arrested Sunday after leading state troopers on a 66-mile chase throughout the Rocky Mountains along Interstate 70, authorities say.

The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Sonia Sovereign from California, has been booked under suspicion of driving under the influence, aggravated motor vehicle theft, driving without a license, felony eluding, second degree assault on a police officer and driving with an open container.

She was taken to a hospital after the incident ended early Sunday morning to determine whether or not she had a medical condition, according to Colorado State Patrol.

Early Sunday morning, CSP troopers took a call at milepost 245 on I-70 in Jefferson County of someone possibly driving intoxicated. A trooper reportedly spotted the vehicle and chased it as it went from Jeffco into Clear Creek County.

The trooper cut off pursuit at the Eisenhower Tunnel due to safety concerns, authorities say.

Then a trooper from Vail saw the vehicle and started pursuit in Summit County. CSP says the driver failed to yield to the trooper's flashing lights.

Sixty three miles after troopers first tried to stop the car, officers tried to use stop-sticks on the road - to no avail.

Then, just three miles past that, troopers were able to contact the driver, who pulled over on her own, CSP says. She was taken into custody there.

The woman's charges have not been released at this time.
