Students released early after false report of gun at Westminster High School

The student who made the false report has been cited.

Students at Westminster High School were released early following a police investigation at the school on Thursday.

Around 10 a.m., the Westminster Police Department was notified of a threat circulating on social media that said there was a gun found in the bathroom at the high school.

Steve Saunders with Westminster Public Schools says police entered the high school after a student reported a weapon there.

Police placed the school on a lockout and searched the school, but did not find a gun and determined the threat was false.

The student who made the false report has been cited, according to Saunders.

"It is important for students to know that there is no such thing as a harmless prank or a joke when it comes to school safety. In almost all incidents, the students are identified and held accountable," Westminster Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Pamela Swanson said in a letter to parents.

The district says all students and staff are safe. Students were released at 11:30 a.m.
