Dog credited with alerting family to house fire

The Boulder County Sheriff's Office called Sam, a 14-year-old dachshund, a true hero.

Boulder County — A 14-year-old dachshund helped alert a family without working smoke detectors to a fire burning inside their home, according to a Facebook post by the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office says firefighters were recently called to a home in unincorporated Boulder County that was having electrical issues.

The family had fallen asleep, but eventually woke up sound of their dog, Sam, barking to get their attention.

That’s when the family noticed smoke inside the home and significant heat coming from the ceiling. The family called 911 and got out of the home without injury.

The sheriff’s office says if it weren’t for Sam, the family might not have detected the fire until it was too late.

In the post, the sheriff’s office also encouraged homeowners to make sure smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are in working order.
