Our Next Question comes from Steve M., and it's a particularly saucy question about street names in Milliken, Colorado.
Steve heard that "most of the North-South streets are named after prostitutes that worked at the local bordello in the very early 1900's... old fashioned women's names like Josephine, Marjorie, Irene, Olive..."
So, we went to Milliken to find out if that's true. We found plenty of streets that were just as Steve described.
We also found plenty of people in the town who believed the same thing as Steve -- that these streets are named for prostitutes.
For an answer, we had to go to someone who would really know. That led us to Kent Brown.
"It was a railroad an agricultural community. That's how it got its start. It was the hub. Several railroads entered into this area."
Brown is the town administrator in Milliken. He's heard the same as Steve.
"What I got told was that the names on the streets within Milliken were ladies of the night, that provided services... uh... for the railroad employees, and general commerce."
He isn't sure where the rumor started exactly, but people who have been around for a while don't go by that story.
"The old-timers say that the names were for the wives, or other family members of the Denver, Laramie & North Western Railroad, which was one of the original railroads here in Milliken ... a little less racy, a little less controversial. Of course, that doesn't carry as much weight with folks, so then it gets to, 'Well, we'll go with the first story regarding the rumor, rather than what it could more than likely be.'"
And there you have it. Maybe the rumor is true, but maybe, it's just more fun.
