DENVER — Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado received a five-game suspension for charging the mound and then fighting during a game against the Padres earlier this week at Coors Field.

Joe Torre, Chief Baseball Officer for Major League Baseball, made the announcement Friday

Padres pitcher Luis Perdomo also received a five-game suspension for intentionally throwing a pitch at Arenado and then fighting.

On Wednesday Arenado charged the mound after a fastball from Luis Perdomo sailed behind him, setting off the heated brawl that resulted in five ejections during a testy game in which Colorado beat the San Diego Padres 6-4.

The tension between these two NL West teams started boiling a night earlier at Coors Field when Padres outfielder Manuel Margot got hit in the ribs by a pitch, putting him on the disabled list.

Rockies outfielder Gerardo Parra received a four-game suspension for fighting. Padres pitcher Buddy Baumann received a one-game suspension for fighting.

Perdomo, Arenado, Parra and Baumann all received undisclosed fines.

Catcher A.J. Ellis and infielder Freddy Galvis of the Padres and pitcher German Márquez of the Rockies were all fined for their roles in the incident.

Unless appealed, the suspensions of Perdomo, Arenado and Parra are scheduled to be effective Friday night, when the Padres are to host San Francisco and the Rockies are to visit Washington.

If any player elects to appeal, then the discipline issued to him will be held until the process is complete.

The suspension of Baumann, who has since been optioned to Triple-A El Paso, will be effective upon his return to the Major Leagues, pending appeal.
