DENVER - In the wake of the sexual abuse scandal involving former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, advice columnist Lisa Vratny-Smith knew it would only be a matter of time before a local mom posed this question: "How do I talk to (my children) about staying safe without scaring them?"

Vratny-Smith writes the Mama Drama column for milehighmamas.com. That question is the topic of her latest column. Vratny-Smith says parents shouldn't assume that one small talk will last a child a lifetime. She says parents need to remind children and teenagers about inappropriate touching by adults or other children.

Among her other points: a reminder that sexual abuse is often committed by someone that the child or their parents know very well.
