COLORADO SPRINGS - Colorado Springs police canceled an Amber Alert for missing 2-year-old Essence Lovato after she was found safe and sound Wednesday afternoon.
Colorado Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Susan Medina says a tip received by police after the state agency issued an Amber Alert Wednesday led investigators to a home in nearby Fountain. Essence Lovato was found safe in the home.
Essence was missing for almost 24 hours. Colorado Springs police believe the child was with a family acquaintance, 38-year-old Tonia Shetina.
Colorado Springs police say Essence's mom was having an argument with her boyfriend at a home in the 400 block of Kiowa. The mother asked Shetina to take her daughter out of the residence. Colorado Springs police say Shetina was supposed to take the child to her grandfather's house, which was nearby. When the mother tried to check on her daughter the Tuesday, she realized the 2-year-old was missing.
9Wants to Know has learned that Shetina had only know the girl's mom for two weeks. Police say Shetina is a drug user. A close relative of Shetina says she has two children of her own, but she does not have custody of those children. That relative says she does not think Shetina would intentionally harm any child.
Police say Shetina may face charges of kidnapping and auto theft.
