The number of renter households grew by one million in 2011. That's the biggest boost since the early 1980s.

That boost forced rent prices to increase.

According to Denver real estate agent Marcy Eastman, higher rents, falling home prices and record low mortgage rates are making it more affordable to buy a home.

Eastman says some prospective buyers might be scared off by a "fixer-upper," but some homes will be good to go after a little work.
