CONSUMER REPORTS: Money-saving pet care

posted by Dan Boniface     12 days ago

DENVER - We love 'em, but pets cost us plenty. In the first year, cat owners spend an average of $1,000. And a medium-sized dog will run you more than $1,500. But, Consumer Reports Money Adviser has tallied up lots of ways to save on pets.

Buying in bulk, looking for coupons, and looking for sales can save money. Shopping online helps, too! You may think paying more for pet food means you're getting better quality, but Consumer Reports says that's not necessarily so. What's essential is getting food that's labeled "complete and balanced." Also look on the label for food that meets the standards of the American Association of Feed Control Officials or AAFCO.

When it comes to medicine for your pet, you can save there, also. Always ask your vet if there's a lower-priced generic available. And ask if the drug's available at your pharmacy, where you might be able to get it for less.

And Consumer Reports says to skip health insurance for your pet. Pet insurance may cost you more than you'll save because, like people insurance, there are co-pays, deductibles, and premiums, and limits on your coverage.

To save on pet supplies check out sites like eBay, Craigslist, and Freecycle. And one more way to save, have a neighbor look after your pet when you're away so you can save on kennel charges.
